Who We Are
What’s it Like to Teach For America?
[I exit] the doors with a sense of peace and fulfillment from the work I did that day…Teaching is hard, but what other profession allows you to work with young people every single day and support them on their life journey?
The best decision that I've ever made in my life was doing TFA in Baltimore and becoming a teacher, hands down. I met my kids and it sounds really cliche, but as soon as I started teaching, I just fell in love with them and recognized that they're the leaders the world so desperately needs.
Something that I continue to love about Teach For America is the fact that there is this audacity that we can make a difference and we’re not just going to talk about it, but we’re going to put some teeth behind it.
Working with the students gives me joy and hope in a way that nothing I've ever done does. I’ve been through a lot this year in my personal life. And on my worst days, even if getting out of bed is the hardest thing in the world, that connection with my students feels so whole.
I was a student in Chicago Public Schools and today, I’m creating opportunities that I didn’t have as a student. When we keep our students first and we keep their goals in front of us, I think we can do nothing but be successful.
I remind my students that if we nurture our value of education and continue our thirst for knowledge, no matter what obstacles we face, we can and shall overcome. I want them to hold on to infinite hope.
For many of us, what started as a two-year commitment has turned into a lifelong mission. Whether in the classroom, or in union and system leadership, or work in education technology, you see a passion among our alumni to do whatever it takes to eliminate the inequities our children face every day.
I appreciated Teach For America for preparing us to be flexible … they gave us the basics to feel grounded but also that creativity to branch out and do what was best for our students and community.
I joined Teach For America because I want students to know that growing up in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities is not something to be ashamed of or a liability. Growing up in such communities—as in my case—can be the driving force for their personal, academic, and professional success.
It is important for me as a man of color to be a force in the education movement because many of the decisions made that impact students in under-resourced communities are not made by people who reflect the backgrounds and experiences of those in the communities the policies most directly affect.
Take the First Step
Fuel far-reaching social change while developing lifelong leadership skills.

“I had never assumed that I would be a classroom teacher, let alone have a 20-year career as a basketball coach.”
Meet Marshall Cho (NY ’00) @coachmarshallcho, a coach, educator, and community builder who is a passionate advocate of basketball. He began his career with TFA teaching mathematics in the South Bronx and Harlem, while also serving as the boys' basketball coach at Future Leaders Institute, where he led them to a NYC Charter School Championship.
“The foundation upon which I learned to be an educator in the first 6 years in New York prepared me for the big leap of moving to Mozambique, Africa for the opportunity to work with players from that country,” Coach Marshall explains.
When asked about his mentors, he names Parag Joshi, “[He] not only was my lead at the 2000 Houston [Pre-Service], but would be an invaluable help during my first 3 years with the NYC Corps.”
Coach Marshall’s time in the classroom inspired his coaching methods. “While I still enjoyed being a mathematics teacher for over 10 years, [once] I transitioned to full time coaching, I made sure that the beginning of each practice was devoted to not only checking in about how their days were, but to talk about what’s going on in the world beyond the basketball courts.”
It seems leading and educating runs in the family. Coach Marshall names his sister, Maggie Cho, as his hero. “She joined Teach For America back in 2006 after graduating from University of Washington,” he says. “She taught for years in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn, and when she relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2014 to help care for our mother who was battling Stage 4 Breast Cancer, she found under-resourced schools to work at in Portland as a teacher and later on as an administrator."
When we asked Coach Marshall how TFA launched his career, he responded: “What TFA did for me was launch me into a trajectory full of deep, meaningful relationships that fundamentally changed the lens through how I view the world.” In Bowlee's (@lehgehboweh) words, it’s your chance to do something meaningful. As an Ignite tutor, you’ll make a difference, get paid, and gain valuable work experience. Celebrate #NationalTutorAppreciationWeek with us—and consider becoming an Ignite Fellow.

Meet Katie Lee (Arkansas ’13), a talented muralist who found her passion for creativity through teaching. Her journey as an educator helped shape her approach to art, where she now creates impactful murals for schools and communities. Her current goal is ambitious (how very TFA of her): she plans to paint a mural in each of the 50 states 🎨✨
When sharing how her experience as a corps member influenced her art career, she says, “The corps experience gave me confidence that I carry to this day and sparked friendships that are still going strong 10+ years later. I now have the privilege of going into various public, private, and charter schools to add to their spaces – I'm able to create impactful works of art for them because of my time as an educator.”
Katie’s advice to any budding artist or teacher: Don't be afraid to start small and enjoy the journey. Art, like life, is a process. Keep expressing, keep creating, and never stop learning. 💫 #TeachForAmerica #ArtTeacherLife #CreativeJourney - PreviousNext

Horses have always been a big part of David Silver’s (NY ’12) life. After teaching fourth and fifth grades at Detroit’s Burns Elementary school, Silver is now sharing his equine passion with others through @DetroitHorsePower, a nonprofit he started to connect Detroit youth ages 11-18 with horses to build skills that extend beyond the classroom.
“I would not be doing this work today if it weren't for Teach For America,” David said. “I had never even been to Michigan before my TFA placement in Detroit in 2012…As a result, I ended up starting Detroit Horse Power so that kids like my students could have access to the deep and life-changing opportunities that horses can provide.”
David says he believes the organization can help instill PERCS skills — Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence and Self-control — in kids and contribute to the reimagining of Detroit in the 21st century.
“What binds [our community] is the shared commitment to Detroit’s young people and the idea that horses can build important skills and strengthen our city’s future.” A newly-minted administrator, TFA alum @Kyle Cohen, M.Ed. shares how meal prepping can transform your life as an educator. By planning and preparing meals in advance, educators can enhance their well-being, boost energy, and stay focused in the classroom. When teachers prioritize self-care, they’re better equipped to support and inspire their students. Meet Taccara Marzette (@tfamemphis ’09) and her brother, Devin Humphrey (@tfadfw ’24). Taccara joined TFA because of her deep-rooted passion for serving children and families. “Joining TFA as a recent college graduate, I thought it was going to be [a bit of a transitional period] for me to find myself and my calling,” Taccara shared with us. “I didn’t realize at the time of accepting my offer that I was joining such a large movement of passionate, like-minded people. That I was becoming a LIFELONG member of something much larger than myself.”
Now, Devin is following in Taccara’s footsteps as a first-year corps member. His sister’s insights and experiences have been invaluable as he navigates his own TFA journey. “[My sister] allowed me to see the growth TFA has had from her point of view and more importantly how impactful it has been to her career in education,” Devin said.

We recognize the powerful intersection of service and education—a bond that shapes leaders, strengthens communities, and extends beyond the classroom or the battlefield.
For Alexander M. Clark (San Antonio ’12), a TFA alumni whose life reflects both, this dedication to service began by example. Inspired by his grandfather’s 26 years of military service, Alexander almost enlisted right out of high school. However, his grandfather underscored the importance of education and encouraged him to go to college first.
After college, Alexander joined Teach For America, dedicating himself to third-grade students in San Antonio. His TFA experience fueled a deeper commitment to service, leading him to enlist in the Air Force Reserve as an intelligence analyst. Later, with support from his TFA network, Alexander pursued law school, co-founding the Texas Law Veterans Association to support veterans on campus.
Today, Alexander carries forward the values instilled in him by both his grandfather and his mentors: teamwork, mission, and service beyond self. His journey reminds us that serving others—whether in the classroom or military—is a calling that lasts a lifetime.
To all who served and are currently serving, we thank you. #VeteransDay the real question is: would you still love me if i was a ruler. #wormgirlfriend #teachers #schoolsupplies ib: @The Devon Maid
