After starting her career in the classroom, Abby Coyle (Hawaii ’18) turned her obstacles into stepping stones for innovation in education.

A firm believer in teaching students real-life skills, Abby created ClassBank, a digital classroom platform, with fellow TFA alumn Katie Gracey (Nashville ’15). They have helped 400,000 students prepare for the real world by integrating financial literacy with classroom management.

Reflecting on her time in the classroom, Abby says, “It’s crucial to start where the action is. Being on the ground floor allows you to experience the challenges firsthand and witness the incredible efforts communities are already making to address some of our most pressing issues. The best approach is to learn by being part of it all—immerse yourself, learn, and then contribute.”

As a math teacher in Brooklyn, Yamilée Toussaint Beach (NY ‘08) saw firsthand how many students felt disconnected from math. With a deep love for both dance and STEM, she set out to change that. She founded STEM From Dance, blending the creativity of movement with the power of technology to help girls see themselves as future innovators.

From St. Louis to Costa Rica ✈️ these students made it happen! With support from their educators (and a whole lot of entrepreneurial hustle), 30 students from University City High School & Kairos Academies funded their own trip abroad: selling coffee, studying biodiversity, and learning real-world business skills.

And it all started over a decade ago with a TFA alum, Samantha Lurie Carroll @samann9 (St. Louis ’08), who believed that students deserve to see the world. Now, @showmetheworldproject is making that dream real for kids across St. Louis.

Maxine Trice McCarty (Houston ‘98) is heading back to school to earn her principal certification at Rice University at the same time as her three sons pursue their own degrees at the University of Houston.

For Maxine, this moment is deeply personal: “It is the fullest of circles for me... I know that they will be just as proud of me when it is my turn to cross the stage at Rice University.”

Her journey as an educator began with Teach For America: “It was in my early years as a corps member that I learned how to create innovative learning environments that made the classroom feel like home.”

Her son Tyler shares the same excitement: “From opening our acceptance letters to wearing college hoodies to staying up late talking about our favorite professors, I enjoy every second of being a student and a son to her.”

For Stephen, this journey is a testament to his mom’s perseverance: “The strongest thing I feel is pride because I see how hard she works to take care of our family and the countless hours she put into me to make me a better student.”

Charlie admires his mother’s drive: “She’s always gone above and beyond in every aspect of her life, and I knew that she would do incredible things at Rice University.”

Thanks to the TFA Texas $450 scholarship, Maxine is proving that “learning has no timeline,” as Tyler puts it.

👋 they met at TFA pre-service in 2017
📚 the two were close friends during their corps service
💖 began dating in 2020
💍 and finally, got engaged in November of 2024!

While wedding plans are still in progress, Taylor and Ally remain steadfast in their commitment to education. Ally is in year 8 of her teaching journey, while Taylor is a part of TFA staff. #TFALove #TeachForAmerica
