Annis Brown

Annis N. Brown is the founding executive director of the Detroit region. She is a native Detroiter and a graduate of Detroit Public Schools. After joining the corps in 2003, she taught seventh and eighth grade English Language Arts and Social studies in the South Bronx. She then went on to work for The New Teacher Project and served as the Training and Support Coordinator for the New York City Teaching Fellows. Annis returned to Michigan to enroll in a doctoral program in Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy at Michigan State University. In addition to conducting research on the achievement gap, she taught undergraduate courses in the US News & World Reports #1 ranked secondary teacher education program at MSU and supervised student teachers in the field. Her peers also elected her as the Chair of the American Educational Research Association's graduate student governance in a national election. Annis' investment in the city of Detroit also led her to become involved in numerous initiatives in the city since her return, including the Future Teachers for Social Justice program, serving high school students from over twenty Detroit Public Schools and the Skillman 'Good Schools' initiative supporting over 41 schools throughout the city.
