New York City is known to have a relatively high cost of living. Accepted applicants receive resources for how to make the transition affordable and second-year corps members can be great resources on how to cut costs. Since housing is generally corps members’ greatest expense, corps members attend sessions during induction to guide them through the process. Many corps members choose to live in Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the Bronx, which are more affordable alternatives to the downtown area. These are also the areas where most corps members teach, so living in these neighborhoods also cuts down on travel time to and from school.

The majority of corps members live with roommates in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, or Brooklyn. Many corps members live with other corps members they met during induction and institute. These rental rates reflect those typically paid by corps members.

Because of New York City's extensive public transportation system, corps members are able to live in many different neighborhoods throughout the city. Teach For America New York City provides moving resources upon joining the corps, and most corps members are able to find affordable and convenient housing by early to mid-August.
